Pennahobilam

hindu temples will have only one dhwaja sthambam outside the temple, opposite to the main deity. dhwaja means FLAG.  STHAMBHAM  means PILLAR. in olden days there were huge number of communities in india. they used a flag to identify themselves with other communities.whenever they built temples their community flag was hoisted before the temple so that to know others , whose community god is in the temple. this practice made    people slowly to install stone pillar in the place of wooden one. in the above photograph there are three dhwaja sthabhs instead of one which is very rare. this temple was constructed by vijaya nagara kings in ananthpuram district of andhra pradesh.this temple is called PENNAHOBILAM and the main deity is narasimha swamy.
